How to Calculate CBM and Chargeable Weight

Freight charges in commercial shipping are determined by the space a shipment consumes on an aircraft, vessel, or trailer relative to its physical gross weight. The standard metric unit of volume across the freight forwarding industry is the Cubic Meter (CBM).

Metric CBM Formula

CBM = [Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) × Pieces] ÷ 1,000,000

Example: 10 cartons measuring 60cm × 40cm × 50cm = (60 × 40 × 50 × 10) ÷ 1,000,000 = 1.2 CBM.

Air Volumetric Weight Formula (IATA)

Volumetric Wt (kg) = CBM × 166.67 (or Divisor: 6,000 cm³/kg)

Under IATA air cargo rules, 1 CBM is equivalent to 166.67 kg. Airlines invoice whichever is greater: actual gross weight or volumetric weight.

1. Optimize Pallet Height

For air freight out of Dubai (`DXB`/`DWC`), keep pallet heights below 160 cm to allow loading onto lower deck aircraft positions, avoiding expensive main-deck freighter surcharges.

2. Evaluate the 14 CBM Threshold

When shipping ocean cargo between 12 and 15 CBM, ask VELO for a comparative quote between LCL and FCL. FCL avoids CFS destination de-stuffing fees and offers faster border clearance.

3. Nest and Stack Cargo

Common questions regarding CBM formulas, dimensional weight, and shipping volume calculation.

CBM stands for Cubic Meter (m³). It is the metric measurement of the volume occupied by cargo. To calculate CBM for rectangular packages in centimeters: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 1,000,000. If your dimensions are in inches: Length (in) × Width (in) × Height (in) ÷ 61,024.

Actual Gross Weight is the physical weight of cargo measured on a scale. Volumetric (or Dimensional) Weight reflects cargo density based on its dimensions. Under IATA rules, airlines charge whichever is higher: the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight (calculated using standard ratio 1 CBM = 167 kg, or cubic divisor of 6,000 cm³/kg).

Standard international commercial air cargo uses the IATA standard divisor of 6,000 cm³/kg (or 1 CBM = 166.67 kg). For express courier shipments (such as DHL, FedEx, or urgent AOG courier services), airlines typically apply the 5,000 cm³/kg divisor (1 CBM = 200 kg). In Less than Container Load (LCL) sea freight, shipping lines bill by 'Revenue Ton' (or 'Freight Ton' W/M: Weight or Measure). One Revenue Ton equals either 1 CBM of volume or 1 Metric Ton (1,000 kg) of weight, whichever yields the higher revenue for the carrier.

A standard 20ft container has a gross internal capacity of approximately 33 CBM, with realistic usable packing volume of 28 to 30 CBM. A standard 40ft container has an internal volume of 67 CBM (usable 56 to 60 CBM), and a 40ft High Cube container has 76 CBM (usable 66 to 70 CBM).

As a general industry rule of thumb, when your ocean cargo exceeds 13 to 15 CBM, booking a dedicated 20ft FCL container is frequently more cost-effective than paying LCL consolidation, handling, and destination de-stuffing fees.
