CBM & Volumetric Weight Calculator
Accurately calculate Cubic Meters (CBM), Cubic Feet (CFT), Air Freight Chargeable Weight, and Ocean LCL Revenue Tons for shipments departing from or arriving in Dubai and global trade hubs.
| Item / Description | Qty | Length (cm) | Width (cm) | Height (cm) | Gross Wt (kg/pc) | Volume | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.920 CBM |
Container Capacity Utilization (FCL vs LCL)
Estimated share of standard shipping container volumes for your 1.92 CBM cargo.
How to Calculate CBM and Chargeable Weight
Freight charges in commercial shipping are determined by the space a shipment consumes on an aircraft, vessel, or trailer relative to its physical gross weight. The standard metric unit of volume across the freight forwarding industry is the Cubic Meter (CBM).
Example: 10 cartons measuring 60cm × 40cm × 50cm = (60 × 40 × 50 × 10) ÷ 1,000,000 = 1.2 CBM.
Under IATA air cargo rules, 1 CBM is equivalent to 166.67 kg. Airlines invoice whichever is greater: actual gross weight or volumetric weight.
Standard Ocean Shipping Container Dimensions & Capacities
Reference standard ocean container capacities when planning Full Container Load (FCL) shipments via Jebel Ali Port (`AEJEA`) or Abu Dhabi Khalifa Port (`AEAUH`).
| Container Type | Internal Dimensions (L × W × H) | Max Usable Volume | Max Payload Capacity | Standard Pallet Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft Standard Dry | 5.90m × 2.35m × 2.39m | ~ 28–30 CBM | 21,770 kg (48,000 lbs) | 10 Standard (120×100cm) / 11 Euro |
| 40ft Standard Dry | 12.03m × 2.35m × 2.39m | ~ 56–60 CBM | 26,500 kg (58,400 lbs) | 20 Standard (120×100cm) / 25 Euro |
| 40ft High Cube (HC) | 12.03m × 2.35m × 2.69m | ~ 66–70 CBM | 26,300 kg (58,000 lbs) | 20 Standard (120×100cm) / 25 Euro |
| 20ft Reefer (Cold Chain) | 5.44m × 2.29m × 2.27m | ~ 26–28 CBM | 27,400 kg (60,400 lbs) | 9 Standard (120×100cm) / 10 Euro |
| 40ft Reefer (Cold Chain) | 11.58m × 2.29m × 2.50m | ~ 60–64 CBM | 29,500 kg (65,000 lbs) | 20 Standard (120×100cm) / 23 Euro |
3 Practical Tips to Reduce Freight Costs in the UAE
For air freight out of Dubai (`DXB`/`DWC`), keep pallet heights below 160 cm to allow loading onto lower deck aircraft positions, avoiding expensive main-deck freighter surcharges.
When shipping ocean cargo between 12 and 15 CBM, ask VELO for a comparative quote between LCL and FCL. FCL avoids CFS destination de-stuffing fees and offers faster border clearance.
Every 1 CBM saved in volumetric packaging reduces chargeable air freight by up to 167 kg. Use compression packaging and pre-engineered crate dimensions whenever possible.
